Menstrual Period: FG Working To Subsidize Price Of Sanitary Pad

The ministry of women affairs says it has embarked on an initiative to subsidize the cost of sanitary pads for school girls in the country.

Mary Ekpere-Eta, director-general of the national centre for women development, a parastatal of the ministry of women affairs, made this during a press briefing to commemorate the 2019 International Day of the Girl in Abuja on Friday.

Investigation carried out by the cable into how the education and health of schoolgirls are affected by the inability to afford sanitary pads.

In the report, some of the affected persons said they were unable to afford sanitary pads even for N200, hence stay away from school during their menstrual period.

She said efforts are ongoing to reach an arrangement with companies who produce sanitary pads to sell at subsidised rates in rural areas.

Ekpere-Eta enjoined the companies to support the initiative by reducing the cost and making it easily available.

She said young girls would be spared the pain of wondering how to get pads that they cannot afford.

“We have a menstrual hygiene corner in our programme whereby many of you could just drop in maybe N10 or N20 and there’s an arrangement with most of these companies who produce sanitary pads who will now sell at subsidised rates, which we will distribute to rural areas, especially in secondary schools, “she said.

“Be that as it may, we are working further to see how the issue of price will be dealt with. But it is a gradual process and we need to find a way to reach the manufacturers and find out how to reduce the price.

“Through advocacy, we encourage as a corporate social organisation from other agencies and private sector, to ensure that every organisation will buy a certain quantity of pads available to schools and send to rural areas as their own CSR.”

Wunmi Onanuga, chairperson of the committee of women development and social development, and four other lawmakers also moved a motion on the matter at the plenary session on Thursday.

Mum Wanted A Quiet Burial, I’ll Give Her Carnival –Charly Boy

Maverick entertainer and activist, Charles Oputa, aka Charly Boy, has said that his mother, Mrs Margaret Oputa, who passed on during the week, lived a fulfilled life.

The activist said though he was not in the country when she passed, his wife, daughters and grandchildren were with her.

The self-acclaimed president of all frustrated Nigerians said his mother died in her sleep and her death was worth celebrating.

In a chat with Saturday Beats, he said, “My mother died at 102. I had been out of the country. I spoke with her three days ago before her demise, but we thank God.

Her death is a celebration because she lived to a ripe old age. She died in my house— my wife, daughter and granddaughter were all there.”

Area Fada noted that he would miss the special moments he spent with his mother. “I’ll miss our chats and videos— my mom was a very hip hop person.

She always wanted to know about what people were saying about our videos. She also liked to talk about our old times and my rascally ways, among several other things.

Sometimes, choristers would come to the house to serenade her. And I often took her to watch comedy shows in Abuja. She was the go-to person for me. It’s not easy to give birth to someone like Charly Boy.

She was really a great woman, and we had very loving moments. I can say she died happily. She passed on in her sleep and certainly lived a good life,” he said.

The 68-year-old grandfather also revealed that his mother’s wish was to have a very simple and quiet burial ceremony. However, he said his personality would not allow him to grant her request.

He stated, “For the burial, my mum said she wanted a very simple ceremony. She said I should keep it peaceful, but Charly Boy does not do simple things.

She lived a good life and did all that she wanted to do. My love for humanity and humility came from her. The burial will be in December because I need to hustle. It’s going to be a big celebration and carnival.”

The car rental company posted on Instagram via its username, luxuryrentalbenelux, that the car was rented in June in Zurich, Switzerland.

According to Luxury Rental Benelux, the car which has been reportedly sighted in Ghana has a Nigerian number plate customised with the name, “Chosen 1“.

The company promised a cash reward of €10,000 for anyone who has tips regarding the current location of the car and how it can be found.

Meanwhile, another version of the report by Zurich local media, Blick, identified the owner of the car as Deniz Torun, aged 30.

The specific model of the car is Lamborghini Huracan Spyder (610 hp) while its original number plate is ZG-27482.

“He was a guest in this hotel, so I trusted him, I did not worry about my Lambo,” Torun told the local newspaper.

Torun said the supposed Ghanaian, however, did not return the car on the scheduled date and had upgraded its GPS, making it difficult for him to locate.

The last location Torun tracked the car to was Jestetten, a town in Germany.

The police in Zurich have reportedly started investigating the alleged theft.

The Lamborghini Huracan Spyder has a powerful V10 engine and costs a good 200,000 francs in Switzerland, Blick newspaper notes.

Unbelievable!!! Nigerian Lady Stabs Her Fiancé To Death Over Engagement Ring

A 27-year-old woman, Blessing Edet, has been sentenced to 10 years in jail for stabbing her fiancé, Edet Ebong, 33, to death during a fight over her refusal to wear an engagement ring he gave her at their residence in Lagos.

According to TheNation, the Lagos State government has arraigned the convict on July 5, 2017, on a lone count charge of murder before Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo.

The prosecution, Mr F. Oyedale, had alleged that Edet committed the offence on August 18, 2015 at about 12.15 am at her residence at No. 1, Falana Street, Ogombo, Lekki, Lagos. .

During trial, the prosecution called five witnesses including the sister to the deceased, Esther Ebong, a medical doctor and the Investigating Police Officer (IPO) while Blessing testified in her defence. .

Blessing had told the court that the deceased came to her apartment at midnight, woke her up and requested her to cook a meal for him. She said she refused to do so because she was tired.

The convict said that the late Ebong then went into the kitchen and found the engagement ring he had given her beside the stove. She said he became angry and asked her why she was not wearing the ring. .

According to her, the deceased at this point broke their mirror and used part of it to stab her as a result of which she cried out to neighbours for help. .

She said it was in the course of the fight that ensued between them that she stabbed Ebong in his abdomen with a kitchen knife before any of their neighbours got there. .

Delivering judgement in the matter on Wednesday, Justice Taiwo held that Blessing acted in self-defence. The trial judge also commuted the charge of murder against Blessing to voluntary manslaughter.

Justice Taiwo held that the convict did not intend to cause grievous bodily harm to the deceased when she stabbed him in the lower part of his abdomen. She then proceeded to sentence the convict to ten years imprisonment, with effect from August 2015 when she was remanded at Kirikiri Female Prisons.

Soldier’s Dog Tears Off Baby’s Scalp In Abuja Barracks

A 13-month-old baby, Michael Duniya, is currently battling to stay alive after being almost mauled to death by a pitbull at Mambilla Barracks, Abuja.

The PUNCH which visited the barracks on Wednesday was informed that the incident occurred on Tuesday around 7.30am.

The black dog, believed to be a pitbull, was said to have broken free from its cage and wandered off into the block where little Michael was playing with his four-year-old brother.

Upon seeing the dog, his older brother immediately fled into the house but Michael was not quick enough as the dog pounced on him.

The dog subsequently grabbed him by the head and pulled him about 30 metres away and began to bite him repeatedly.

A neighbour, who wished to remain anonymous, said she quickly raised the alarm.

She said, “I was by my balcony when I saw the dog grab Michael by the head. The dog bit his ear and tore off his scalp, exposing his brain.

“Incidentally, Michael did not scream as his blood littered everywhere. About four of us began throwing stones at the dog in a bid to get him to free Michael to no avail.

“Someone was able to get a cutlass and slashed the dog with it but it would not let Michael go. It was when the cutlass hit the face of the dog that the dog fell and died.”

It was learnt that a soldier, a Regimental Sergeant Major, who owns the dog, became furious at the killing of his dog when he was informed.

Another neighbour, who craved anonymity because military personnel are not allowed to speak to the press, said the RSM had about seven dogs.

He said the dogs had been terrorising residents especially children but all complaints to military authorities had fallen on deaf ears.

He said, “Some weeks ago, the same dog was let loose and began chasing children all over the place.

“A little girl fell into a gutter while running. I personally had to save the girl and chase the dog away.

“As a soldier I am not afraid of the dog but these little children playing in the barracks are not safe.”

Our correspondent, who visited the block where the RSM resides, was greeted by the loud barks of dogs.

Attempts to speak with soldiers within the vicinity were rebuffed as he was told that he would need to get permission from the military authorities.

Meanwhile, The PUNCH was informed that Michael was given first aid at the barracks clinic before being transferred to Cedacrest Hospital, Apo.

The father of the victim was said to have donated two pints of blood to his son who was still in critical condition on Wednesday.

The father of the victim refused to speak to The PUNCH on Wednesday, saying, “please get permission from my superiors before talking to me.”

The Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, Army Headquarters Garrison, Lt.Col Omale Ochagwuba, did not respond to repeated calls on Wednesday.
